Full Description

This standard is employed to determine the penetration depth of oxine copper into treated wood to decide whether the treated product meets acceptance levels as prescribed in treatment standards.

This method is not suitable for determining penetration into wood treated with oxine copper dissolved in darkly colored P-9 heavy oil solvents.

This method can also be employed to determine penetration into wood treated with waterborne or light-colored oilborne copper naphthenate or other copper(II)-based preservatives. However, the detection limit is very low so that some contamination, such as some copper(II) from the outer zone of copper(II)-treated wood being transferred to the inner wood zone by the saw blade during cutting the sample, can give a false positive reading.

The detection limit of copper(II) is 5 μg/cm3 or 0.032 kg/m3 (0.002 pcf).
