In the US, approximately 30% of wastewater pipe rehabilitation is currently achieved by trenchless methods and in the United Kingdom some water utilities use these techniques to achieve 60% or more of their water main rehabilitation targets. Yet despite the obvious benefits of decreased disruption and lower costs, the rate of adoption of trenchless technologies in the US has been slow. This paper provides a detailed review of trenchless technologies and their use in the United States and the United Kingdom. Design, specification and lining selection issues are addressed including design for internal pressure and external loads. Lessons learned from the British experience in water mains renovation are summarized. Includes 16 references, tables, figures. See more
