1. General

Principle

Protection of electrical apparatus by sand-filling is obtained by filling the enclosure with a material having the consistency of sand, in such a way that if, under the conditions of use for which the apparatus has been designed, an arc occurs within the enclosure, this arc will not be liable to ignite the outer explosive atmosphere. No ignition should be caused either by the transmission of flame or by the overheating of the walls of the e nclosure.

Object

The object of this Recommendation is to prescribe: (1) The constructional requirements to be met by: (a) enclosures of electrical apparatus; (b) filling materials.

(2) The tests to be made to check compliance with these requirements.

(3) The method of determining the minimum safety height.

(4) The marking of enclosures.

This Recommendation does not deal with the conditions of installation of apparatus nor with the precautions to be taken to ensure that it is used within the limits of voltage, power and short-circuit current for which it has been designed.

This Recommendation does not specify any limit of temperature rise to take into account the danger of direct ignition of certain gases or vapours, arising from their contact with the outer surface of the enclosure and from its temperature. .

The danger of ignition by hot surfaces is a common feature of all protection problems. It is under consideration.

2. Scope

The method of protection by sand-filling applies only to electrical apparatus, or parts thereof, which have no moving parts in direct contact with the filling material and which in addition comply with the relevant IEC Recommendations. /

Principe

La protection du materiel electrique par remplissage pulverulent est realisee par un remplissage de l'enveloppe avec un materiau a l'etat pulverulent de maniere telle que si, dans les conditions d'emploi prevues a la construction, un arc jaillit a l'interieur de l'enveloppe, il ne puisse provoquer l 'inflammation de l'atmosphere explosive exterieure. Il ne doit y avoir inflammation ni par propagation de la flamme, ni par echauffement excessif des parois de l'enveloppe.

Objet

La presente recommandation a pour objet de fixer:

(1) Les conditions auxquelles doivent satisfaire a la construction: (a) les enveloppes du materiel electrique; (b) le materiau utilise pour le remplissage.

(2) Les essais destines a verifier que ces conditions sont remplies.

(3) La methode de determination de la hauteur minimale de securite.

(4) Les marques et indications a porter sur les enveloppes.

Elle ne traite pas des conditions auxquelles l'installation doit satisfaire, ni des precautions a prendre pour que son utilisation demeure a l'interieur des limites de tension, de puissance et de regime de court-circuit pour lesquelles le materiel est construit.

Elle ne fixe pas les limites d'echauffement pour tenir compte du danger d'inflammation directe de certains gaz ou vapeurs au contact de la surface externe de l'enveloppe en raison de sa temperature .

Le risque d'inflammation par les surfaces chaudes est commun a tous les modes de protection. Il est a l'etude.

2. Domaine d'application

Le mode de protection par remplissage pulverulent ne peut s'appliquer qu'aux materiels ou parties de materiel electrique ne comportant pas de pieces mobiles au contact direct du materiau de remplissage et satisfaisant par ailleurs aux recommandations de la CEI qui les concernent. See more
