Full Description

It is estimated that more than 4,000 people die each year from Legionnaires’ disease. Some experts feel that potable systems are the most important source of Legionella sp. This document is intended to provide a knowledge base for potable water treatment and water system design that may help limit the risk of distribution of Legionella sp. Exact recommendations for the treatment and design of a potable water system are often site-specific and dictated by a variety of factors such as the population utilizing the potable water, local regulatory concerns, and cost. It is important to make an educated risk assessment prior to designing a new system or implementing a treatment program in an existing system.

The recommendations do not take the place of any legally mandated requirements issued by local, state, or federal government or their agencies. The use of biocide products or methodologies should comply with application instructions associated with those products and any governmental restrictions related to concentrations of disinfectant and their resulting by-products.
