Full Description

Since the wide diffusion of LEDs, the Colour Rendering Index (CRI) has revealed its limitations. Even though for many years, new methods have been developed to measure and assess colour rendering, today an agreed and commonly shared method to assess light sources rendering is still not available.

In this work, we propose the SDCRI (Spectral Divergence CRI), an alternative approach to measure light rendering which considers just the emission spectrum of the light source under analysis. We evaluate this metric in some perceptual experiments, discussing two relevant experiments from existing literature, as well as our own experiments using the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 hue test.

In this preliminary study, the proposed metric not only provides a simplification of the current methodologies to assess light colour rendering but demonstrated promising correlations with users' colour discrimination.
