Full Description

Preface

This is the first edition of CSA/ANSI B107, Enclosed hydrogen equipment — Safety. This Standard is based on proven engineering principles, research, and the combined expertise of gas utilities, manufacturers, users, and others having specialized experience. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of Natural Resources Canada. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Subcommittee on Enclosed Hydrogen Equipment, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Fuel Cells and the Strategic Steering Committee on Transportation, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard.

Scope

1.1 Inclusions

This Standard applies to assemblies of hydrogen equipment integrated into an enclosure (i.e., enclosed hydrogen equipment, or EHE), such as a freight container or custom enclosure. See Annex B for examples of EHE. This Standard applies to enclosures with a minimum floor area of 7.4 m 2 (80 ft 2 ) and a maximum floor area of 41.8 m 2 (450 ft 2 ). The floor area of the EHE is calculated from the outermost walls of the EHE regardless of whether the EHE contains internal compartments (see Figures 1 and 2). This Standard applies to EHE intended for stationary outdoor operation. This Standard primarily addresses the safety requirements related to hydrogen and its use inside an enclosure. Notes: 1) This Standard applies to both the equipment and the enclosure (i.e., the combination of the hydrogen equipment and the enclosure in which it is integrated). 2) The equipment enclosure can be a custom-built enclosure or a modified freight container, such as an ISO 1496-1 container. 3) ISO containers conforming to ISO 1496-1 have floor areas within the range noted in this clause. 4) This Standard applies to both fixed and transportable EHE.

1.2 Exclusions

1.2.1 Products covered by another product safety standard

This Standard does not apply to hydrogen equipment that has its own enclosure and is covered by one of the following product safety standards: a) stationary fuel cell power systems, which are covered by CSA/ANSI FC 1 • CSA C22.2 No. 62282-3-100; b) portable fuel cell power systems, which are covered by ANSI/CSA AMERICA FC 3; c) fuel cell modules with enclosures, which are covered by CSA/ANSI FC 6 or CSA C22.2 No. 62282-2; d) electrolyzers, which are covered by CSA/ANSI B22734; e) dispensers, which are covered by CSA/ANSI HGV 4.1 or CSA HPIT 2; and f) compact hydrogen fuelling stations, which are covered by CSA/ANSI HGV 5.2 or CSA IR 3-18. Note: The standards referenced in this clause include requirements for the equipment enclosure.

1.2.2 Other equipment

This Standard does not apply to a) gas cabinets that are installed in accordance with and comply with the requirements of NFPA 2, Section 6.19 or CAN/BNQ 1784-000; b) exhausted enclosures that are installed in accordance with and comply with the requirements of NFPA 2, Section 6.20; c) unenclosed hydrogen equipment installed in a room or building; or d) hydrogen equipment placed in shipping containers or custom enclosures solely for the purpose of transportation or storage of the equipment.

1.3 Terminology

In this Standard, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.4 Dual measurements

The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. All references to pressure throughout this document are to be considered gauge pressures unless otherwise specified.
