Full Description

Preface

This is the fourth edition of CSA C22.2 No. 245, Marine shipboard cable. It supersedes the previous editions published in 2017, 2015, and 1995. It is one of a series of Standards issued by CSA Group under Part II of the Canadian Electrical Code. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) relocated all tables to the end of the text, resulting in new Tables 1 to 7 and existing tables renumbered in order; b) updated language on voltage rating in Clause 1.1 to align with other product standards; c) updated Clause 1.2 to indicate that the cables in this Standard are outside the scope of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I; d) added requirements for cables rated over 2 kV in Clauses 4.1.3.1, 5.1.2, 5.2.4, 5.3.4.1.1, 5.3.6.1, 5.3.7.1, 5.3.8.1, and 5.3.12; e) added requirements for Type P insulation material in Clauses 4.2.1, 5.3.13, and 5.3.14, and Table 12b); f) removed the term "low-smoke zero-halogen" and the marking code symbols "LSE/LSX/LSS" in Tables 1, 11, and 12a), and updating the marking requirements in Clauses 6.1 and 6.2 for halogen- free insulation and jacket types to align with other CSA product standards; g) updated the requirements for individually shielded components and overall shielding in Clause 4.8; h) updated Clause 4.12.1.1 and Table 14 to replace the terms "low smoke zero halogen", "low smoke halogen free", and "LSZH" with the terms "limited-smoke halogen-free" and "HF" to align with the terminology in other CSA product standards and to differentiate from the terminology in UL 1309 and IEEE 1580; i) updated the requirements for cable jackets in Clauses 4.14, 4.15, 4.16, and 4.17; j) updated the requirements for the pulling through metal plates test in Clause 5.3.8; k) added requirements for the oil and mud resistance test in Clause 5.3.12 and Annex C; l) provided the long-term insulation resistance requirements, which were removed from the 2017 edition in error, in Table 12a); m) added a note to indicate the load for the heat deformation test in Table 14; and n) provided the aging requirements for 90 °C rated limited-smoke halogen-free thermoplastic polyolefin jacket, which were omitted in the 2017 edition in error, in Table 14. This Standard is intended to meet the electrical regulations of the Canadian Coast Guard. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Integrated Committee on Control, Instrument Communication, and Marine Cables, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Wiring Products and the Strategic Steering Committee on Requirements for Electrical Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

Scope

1.1 This Standard specifies the requirements for distribution (power), control, and signal cables, for use aboard marine vessels and fixed and floating offshore drilling or production platforms, that are a) rated up to 35 kV (phase-to-phase) maximum; b) in single- or multi-conductor constructions; c) with or without metal armour; and d) with or without an overall jacket.

1.2 These cables are outside the scope of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I. Note: Installation of cables is subject to the requirements found in industry standards and local regulations.

1.3 In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.4 The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only.
