Full Description

Preface

This is the ninth edition of CSA Z98, Passenger ropeways and passenger conveyors . It supersedes the previous editions published in 2019, 2014, and 2007 under the same title and in 2001, 1996, 1991, 1978, and 1968 under the title Passenger ropeways. The following are the major changes to this edition: a) updated reference standards; b) updated requirements for i) sheave access rails; ii) tower identification numbers; iii) Table 2 required brakes, antiroll back devices, and retarding devices; iv) grip resistance to sliding; v) collapse of aerial cables or conductors; vi) wire rope grounding clamps; vii) Table 3 pictogram signs; viii) prevention of carrier collisions; ix) splice tail length increased to 60× rope diameter; x) mechanical sockets; xi) rope replacement criteria; and xii) daily inspection for abnormal fixed-grip migration; c) additions to Annex L; and d) a revised Annex H. CSA Group acknowledges that the development of this Standard was made possible, in part, by the financial support of the Association des stations de ski du Québec (ASSQ), Atlantic Ski Resort Association (ASRA), Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA), and Ontario Snow Resorts Association (OSRA). This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Passenger Ropeways and Passenger Conveyors, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Public Safety, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group.

Scope

1.1 Inclusions

This Standard specifies requirements for the design, manufacture, construction, modification, operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of passenger ropeways and passenger conveyors.

1.2 Exclusions

This Standard does not address a) the requirements for abnormal or unusual conditions that are not specifically provided for; b) all prescribed details of engineering and construction; and c) all safety issues associated with passenger ropeways and passenger conveyors.

1.3 Equipment covered

For this Standard, passenger ropeways and passenger conveyors include a) reversible passenger ropeways with single- or double-track ropes; b) fixed and detachable grip circulating above-surface monocable, bi-cable, and tri-cable ropeways, including cabin ropeways, chair ropeways, and similar devices; c) surface ropeways, including T-bar ropeways, J-bar ropeways, platter ropeways, and similar devices; d) tows, including wire and fibre rope tows; e) tows for secondary carriers; and f) devices with a moving flexible element that i) transport passengers uphill for recreational or sport activities; or ii) are used as loading conveyors.

1.4 Freight

Freight may be carried on passenger ropeways and passenger conveyors provided allowance has been made in the design and appropriate precautions are taken.

1.5 Funicular railways

This Standard may be adopted for use with funicular railways and self-powered reversible passenger ropeways.

1.6 Terminology

In this Standard, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
