This RP describes appropriate testing methods and several key indicators needed to describe the performance of electrolyser systems, including the limitations of, and relevant considerations for, each. It provides a clear description of system boundaries so that the performance of electrolyser systems can be compared in a like-for-like manner.

The tests described in this document refer to performance testing. Other types of tests can refer to mechanical or electrical tests or the testing of overall control and safety systems. These other types of tests are outside the scope of this RP.

This RP does not address testing requirements with respect to the availability or sustainability of electrolyser systems. Availability can be assessed and verified as part of a reliability, availability, and maintainability (RAM) analysis on a project-specific basis. Sustainability can typically be assessed using a lifecycle assessment (LCA) approach that considers the environmental impact throughout the lifecycle of the system. This can include a specific assessment of the ability to re-cycle, which is recommended due to the amount of rare materials (e.g. polymers) and elements (e.g. platinum) that can be used in electrolyser systems.
