Proper design, construction and operation of key HVAC subsystems and associated components are critical to prevent hospital borne infections and cross contamination, which are the top indoor air quality concerns in today's health care facilities.

Guidance to help architects and engineers identify and prevent design and construction deficiencies was discussed at the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers' (ASHRAE) IAQ 2004 Conference. These conference proceedings are now available on CD.

IAQ 2004 Critical Operations: Supporting the Healing Environment Through IAQ Performance Standards was held March 15-17, 2004, at the Tampa (Fla.) Convention Center. The conference addressed the critical role that IAQ performance standards provide in support of health care facilities. Organized by ASHRAE, the IAQ conference took place simultaneously with the American Society of Healthcare Engineer's (ASHE) International Conference and Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction (PDC).
