Full Description

Work to ensure electrical product safety by following NFPA 791, Recommended Practice and Procedures for Unlabeled Electrical Equipment Evaluation.

NFPA 791, Recommended Practice and Procedures for Unlabeled Electrical Equipment Evaluation covers recommended procedures for evaluating unlabeled electrical equipment for compliance with nationally recognized standards. Equipment must be capable of being installed in accordance with the NFPA 70®, National Electrical Code® (NEC®).

A companion to NFPA 790, Standard for Competency of Third-Party Field Evaluation Bodies, NFPA 791 addresses the process in a consistent and reliable manner, thereby facilitating acceptance of results.

NFPA 791 provides Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) with industry approved recommended practices and procedures for:

  • Evaluating unlabeled electrical equipment
  • Determining the acceptability of evaluation results reported by recognized third-party evaluation bodies
  • Evaluating multiple units of the same equipment

Changes in the 2018 edition of NFPA 791 include:

  • An updated reference to the NEC edition date in Chapter 2, and a reaffirmed date for ASQ Z1.4, Sampling Procedures and Tables for Inspection by Attributes in Annex C
  • Edits that refer to applicable nationally recognized standard(s) and clarify the purpose of the document
  • Changes in Sections 5.8 and 5.11 that relate to overcurrent protection and marking for fuses and replacement elements

NFPA 791 is used to inform AHJs and provide recommended procedures for third-party field evaluation bodies (FEBs) to perform evaluations in a consistent and reliable manner. (Print, 20 pp., 2018)
