This chapter covers design and construction of household refrigerators and freezers. Providing optimized conditions for preserving stored food is the primary function of a refrigerator or freezer. This is done by storing food at reduced temperature. Ice making is an essential secondary function in some markets. A related product, the wine chiller, provides optimum temperatures for storing wine, at temperatures from 45 to 65°F (7 to 18°C). Wine chillers are often manufactured by the same companies using the same technologies as refrigerators and freezers.
