ASHRAE Vision 2020 states, “A net zero site energy building produces as much energy as it uses when measured at the site”. Achieving net zero energy status under this definition for most commercial, institutional and industrial facilities is not possible without using combined heat and power (CHP) to some degree. The issue is how to design and deliver CHP systems that meet the building thermal and power load profiles, comply with code requirements and be economically viable.
