This report presents a simplified method for calculating the stresses induced in straight pipe by thrust and moment loadings applied to lugs and other integral attachments. Following the philosophy of the nuclear power piping portion of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, appropriate secondary stress indices are defined. A simple and conservative formula for computing the stress indices is developed using analytical results as a guide. A comparison is made between experimental stress indices and those obtained using the simplified analysis procedure developed here as well as the more complex analysis procedures of Welding Research Council Bulletin 107 (WRC-107 method).
