Preface 

This is the second edition of CSA F379, Packaged solar domestic hot water systems (liquid-to-liquid heat transfer) . It supersedes the previous edition published in 2009 as CAN/CSA-F379 Series, Packaged solar domestic hot water systems (liquid-to-liquid heat transfer), which consisted of CAN/CSA-F379.1, Packaged solar domestic hot water systems (liquid-to-liquid heat transfer) for all-season use; and CAN/CSA-F379.2, Testing and rating for performance — Part 2: DX-to-water heat pumps. This Standard covers packaged solar domestic hot water systems (liquid-to-liquid heat transfer). It covers the use of certified packaged solar hot water systems as well as custom-built systems using certified collectors to allow for commercial and combined system designs (e.g., systems designed for space and domestic hot water heating). This Standard was prepared by the Technical Committee on Solar Thermal Energy, under the jurisdiction of the Strategic Steering Committee on Performance, Energy Efficiency, and Renewables, and has been formally approved by the Technical Committee. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. 

Scope 

1.1 General 

This Standard applies to the performance, durability, and safety of packaged and custom solar domestic hot water (SDHW) systems that use liquid-to-liquid heat transfer and liquid heat storage media. 

1.2 Application 

This Standard applies to the components and materials supplied by the manufacturer/designer, the assembly and installation instructions, and the operation of the system after it has been assembled according to these instructions. This Standard does not apply to site preparation or installation procedures. Note: The installation of systems that meet the requirements of this Standard is covered by CAN/CSA-F383. 

1.3 Exclusions 

This Standard is not intended as a design specification or as an instruction manual for untrained persons. 

1.4 Terminology 

In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
