1. Introduction

The objective of this handbook is to provide environmental management practitioners with a concise, user-friendly guide for understanding and implementing the requirements of CAN/CSA-ISO 14001, Environmental management systems - Specification with guidance for use. The handbook also provides one-stop, concise guidance for establishing and improving an environmental management system (EMS), using existing documents published by CSA.

The handbook comprises four sections. This first section discusses the intent and layout of this handbook. The second section introduces the ISO 14001 standard and discusses its relationship to associated environmental management documents. The third section includes excerpts from the introductory portion of CSA Z825, Guide to ISO 14001 for Auditors and Users, on topical issues related to the application of the ISO 14001 requir ements. The fourth section includes all of the environmental management system requirements from ISO 14001 and uses them as the basis for discussing ways to establish, improve, and assess an EMS. See more
